Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day becomes law in Florida

April 13, 2024

Both Houses of the Florida State Legislature passed their own versions of the bill during the month of March and merged them in the the House version labeled HB 1227.  On April 11, 2024, the Governor of Florida signed HB 1227 into law.  The new law will become fully effective on Jult 1, 2024, which clears the way for the state to officially recognize the  the fourth Thursday of each March as Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day.

“The unanimous passing off the bill, both the Florida House and the Florida Senate Democrats, Republicans,” said Sylvester Terry with the Central Florida Tuskegee Airmen, during a celebration ceremony. “That is unification. It chokes me up thinking about it for the sake of something that is right. It is not about their idea or your idea. It’s not a left versus a right, not conservative. It’s American (heroes) that deserve to be commended for their actions regardless of their race. “
